Who Are REELbrands & What Makes Us Real?
It was Star Wars novelist Michael Woodring Stover who said, “If you take out the team in teamwork, it’s just work. Now who wants that!”.
We have all had those job’s, the ones that are just work, nothing more… soul destroying.
How often do we hear businesses say, “Our employees are our most important asset”? But their employees are not treated well, given authority, trusted or valued. Too often these words are a hollow mantra, and the sad reality of how some businesses are run.
At REELbrands we are a bit different. We have a remote team working together from all over the UK, and one thing we have plenty of… is soul!
Why are REELbrands different?
Fundamentally, we believe that our customers will never love our brand if we as a team do not love it first!
As a team, we go beyond punching the time clock. Each member, brings their own unique passion for the brand to their relationship with the customer. Put simply, we seek and offer genuine solutions, because we genuinely want to.
A major difference of the REELteam is how we work. REELbrands do not have a central head office, the team work from around the UK, from wherever the individual team members live. This progressive approach allows REELteam the flexibility and freedom to build a healthy work – life balance.
We will hear more from our individual team members in a moment.

What makes us a REELteam?
REELbrands have superb products, a string of world first materials, cutting-edge design and technology. We are proud of these achievements, but they are only a part of what makes us REEL.
It falls to the people within REELbrands who create the plans and deliver the processes. The individual team members and the collaboration, that is what truly makes us REEL.
It is our people, our team and together we are REELbrands.
As Apple founder Steve Jobs said, “My model for business is The Beatles. They were four guys who kept each other’s kind of negative tendencies in check. They balanced each other and the total was greater than the sum of its parts. That is how I see business: great things in business are never done by one person. They’re done by a team of people.”
In our next blog, we will talk about how collaboration underpins our company philosophy and influences every customer relationship.
But for now, more about who we are…

So, what really makes us REEL?
We are a creative bunch, its true to say a little non-conformist, with a somewhat maverick sparkle!
CEO Ian Bates will never forget our marketer Rebecca’s hilarious introduction to the business. “I had 5 minutes to make an impact” she says, “but it’s difficult pitching a product on zoom, rather than face to face, with no visual displays. I wanted everyone to connect with the products purpose, while creating a lasting resonance. So, I played a famous Dolly Parton record and built the product narrative over the top. Within seconds everyone was signing along and laughing”.
It was a bold move and a hit with the company!

Boldness runs throughout our brand and courage can be identify in every team member. We all genuinely believe in the higher purpose of our brand. We are all keen to find solutions, build relationships and create a sustainable future.
But as noted above, if you want to know the truth about a business, you talk to the employees. So, I did, I asked them what makes you REEL? This is what they said…
Tim Came, our connector and door opener says… “Helping our customers find ‘reel’ solutions that add value, whether it be for customers, shareholders or the wider community.”
And Dan Evans, our packaging doctor, if you have heard the expression, ‘where there is a will there is a way’, that’s Dan, he is determined to find sustainable solutions for customers. “I’m enthusiastic about technical specification and the science behind things. I am in this to decrease the damage we inflict in our beautiful planet”. There it is, the higher purpose I mentioned early.

Regards the team, Tim says “we are a dynamic and motivated team, dedicated to solving environmental challenges through innovative packaging solutions”.
Our motivation, in part, is born from our Mission, To Create a World Beyond Plastic. But it is also a characteristic of the Co-Founders, Ian Bates and Chris McNiell. I asked Ian, what motivates you to provide REEL solutions?
“Since 2004 and learning from Al Gore’s ‘An Inconvenient Truth’, our mission has been to tackle climate change through pack innovation in a meaningful and measurable way. This is why we chose to focus on creating a world beyond plastic. Teaming-up with like-minded partners; Swanline, Transcend, SPP Labs, A Plastic Planet and others has been part of our plan to find a more sustainable way to deliver products using better materials, design and technology.”
Again, a clear demonstration of how teamwork and collaboration have shaped REELbrands. I also asked Ian, what is the true value of a Reelbrands solution?
“REEL is not in the business of just selling more packaging. On the contrary, we are motivated by our client’s agenda to reduce total cost and environmental impacts, whilst helping them to align their business ethos and add measurable value. This can mean eliminating packaging completely and rethinking how a product is made, packed, stored, delivered, recycled and repurposed. A cradle to cradle approach.”
He continued, “Unlike many packaging companies, we have an unbiased approach and try to recommend designs and materials which simplify a process, whilst reducing waste, carbon and complexity. This includes designing out materials which make recycling difficult and therefore costly. If a pack or part of a pack ends up in the mixed waste stream, the design has failed.
REEL help to untangle myths, communicate common sense whilst providing creative and pragmatic advice. We aim to be thought leaders and agile to the ever-changing landscape of legislation and shifts in demand.”
And there you have it. What makes us REEL? Our people, our purpose, our passion, our pragmatic approach, and our packaging positivity!
