ABOUT THE AWARDS
18 independent judges met virtually for a covid-friendly day’s judging, whittling down hundreds of entries to produce this year’s finalist. Judges included Anita Longley, chair of the Institute of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability, Mike Thornton OBE, Chief Executive of the Energy Saving Trust and Sally Uren OBE, Chief Executive of Forum for the Future.
Several new categories were added for 2021 to widen the scope of the awards, these included the Net-Zero Carbon Strategy of the Year, Green Recovery Initiative of the Year and Business Leader of the Year.
REELbrands have been nominated for both the new Green Recovery Initiative of the Year award and the Plastic Reduction and Innovation award.
The ‘edie’s’, RSA-accredited Sustainability Leaders Awards are now in their 14th year. The awards recognise excellence across the spectrum of green business; from the best efficiency programmes through to product innovations, from stakeholder engagement and social sustainability initiatives, to the people on the ground who are making change happen. The scheme is the UK’s largest and most prestigious sustainability awards initiative.
On Wednesday, 3 February, the winners will be announced during a virtual ceremony, where
hundreds of sustainability, CSR and energy professionals will unite across the globe to recognise the achievements made despite the Covid-19 pandemic.
All this year’s finalists have shifted from talking about ambitious sustainability initiatives to delivering them at scale and at pace. We would like to send our congratulations to all those who have been shortlisted, we are honoured to be in the company of some great businesses and innovative projects.
Over the past year, in spite of the obvious difficulties, we have seen numerous examples of organisations going to great lengths to drive the green industrial revolution. Not just from within their own operations but also through new collaborations.
OUR NOMINATIONS
REELbrands received not one, but two nominations for the Green Recovery Initiative of the Year award. Firstly, for our collaborative partnership, Fish Powered Packaging and secondly, for our REELshield Flip Visor.
The award, brand-new for 2021, was created to celebrate the companies and collaborations who are driving a socially and environmentally sustainable recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic. Judges were looking for initiatives that sought to converge solutions to coronavirus and climate change in a way that accelerates the transition to a net-zero carbon, circular economy.
Other nominees for the Green Recovery Initiative of the Year include, Goldsmiths Green New Deal, Nottingham City Council – Tackling Fuel Poverty to facilitate a green COVID-19 recovery and Vodafone – The Great British Tech Appeal.
REELbrands third nomination, again for our Fish Powered Packaging was shortlisted for the Plastic Reduction and Innovation award. Other nominees for this award include Colgate Palmolive, Ecobooth, Heineken UK and Pura.

ABOUT OUR COLLABORATION – FISH POWERED PACKAGING
We are proud of our formidable packaging partnership, which enabled Three Oceans, a fish manufacturer from Hull, to become the first fish company in the world to power their secondary packaging by using their own waste production.
100% of Three Oceans fish waste is supplied locally to our collaborator CorrBoard Bioenergy, who’s anaerobic digestor powers the corrugated board production facility at CorrBoard UK, with power to spare.
CorrBoard UK are the world’s only Carbon Neutral, corrugated board manufacturer. Their anaerobic digestor has enables the company to become 100% independent of fossil energy and to produce 100% carbon neutral, FSC certified product from renewable energy
REELbrands were then tasked with removing the plastic from the primary packaging, whilst building in efficiency savings. Utilising their new Cygnus®REELboard range, REELbrands created a pop-up leakproof carton that is water resitant, plastic-free and widely recyclable.
REELbrands created Cygnus®REELboard in collaboration with renowned packaging experts Swanline and SPP Labs. It is manufactured in the UK and converted by Heathpak, in the UK’s only BRC accredited solidboard laminator and convertor.

ABOUT REELSHEILD FLIP VISOR
Rising to meet the urgent need for protection against the COVID-19 pandemic, in February 2020 REELbrands designed the REELshield Flip Visor.
The world’s first disposable, plastic-free, protective face shield, collaboratively produced by REELbrands, A Plastic Planet and Tams Packaging. The visor offers a sustainable alternative to plastic PPE and is helping to reduce the environmental impact and in particular the plastic pollution caused by COVID-19.
Despite challenging circumstances and a national lockdown, REELbrands and their developing partner SPP Labs managed to launch REELshield Flip before the country re-opened.
The ground-breaking face shield is adjustable to fit all and carries an inbuilt mist prevention, meaning vision and communication are clear. This great feature, along with its CE certification makes the visor highly suitable for many public facing sectors, including hospitality and retail.
However, unlike conventual face visors, REELshield Flip is home compostable, which also means the visor is 100% plastic free and recyclable! Businesses can also use specific disposal units in collaboration with TerraCycle to recycle their waste.
The compostable wood pulp cellulose film is made by separating cellulose fibres from wood, like the process for making paper, further the cardboard headband is made of FSC food-grade paper board.
REELshield Flip is REELbrands certified and sustainable alternative to plastic PPE, currently a vital part of everyday life, but also a ‘new normal’ way of protecting the planet and ourselves at the same time!
