REELdebate explores the challenges the UK faces with its current waste strategy
Ian Bates, CEO and Dan Evans, REELbrands, were delighted to welcome Roger Wright, Waste Strategy & Packaging Manager at Biffa, to the REELdebate: “The value of waste in a throwaway society” – August 2021.
The debate explored the challenges the UK faces with its current waste strategy and infrastructure and looked at how this sector is managing to respond to changes in legislation and behaviour from key stakeholders.
Roger has broad experience in packaging from both design and technical perspectives working for leading retail groups: Sainsbury’s, M&S, and one of the UK’s leading integrated paper and packaging groups; David S Smith Plc.
He is creative and pragmatic and has brought to Biffa a refreshing perspective of truly understanding the complexities of designing-out waste through material and pack design optimisation to help guide partners to become relevant and future proof with their packaging strategies.
The use of AI technology in waste management is increasingly being used in material waste facilities (MURF’s), with camera’s identifying packaging waste, and directing the waste to the correct silos. Looking ahead, the technology will be able to recognise brands and materials to dispose of waste correctly.
