We are delighted to announce, that REELbrands has been shortlisted in the Design Innovation Reduction category, of the Plastic Free Awards.
The awards, produced by Surfers Against Sewage and Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation, celebrate the eco-warriors protecting our nation from plastic pollution, and bring together all the movers, shakers, and change-makers. The award ceremony will take place on the 17th June 2021.
REELbrands are one of the top three business to be shortlisted for the Design Innovation Reduction category of the Plastic Free Awards. Our fellow shortlisted nominees are Waes Footwear and Wuka underwear.
The Plastic Free Awards are returning for their second year to celebrate those making the biggest waves in the fight against plastic pollution. The awards will be a unique opportunity to recognise the achievements of campaigners, innovators, businesses and communities across the UK leading the charge on plastic.
Partnering with Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation, the awards will bring together environmental champions and leaders of the plastic free movement. With 12 award categories covering all areas from Best Plastic Campaign to Youth Activist Award.
Writer, broadcaster and Head Judge, Lucy Siegle says “Communities and individuals continue to lead the charge on plastics, saying no to unnecessary use that commits us to 500 years of hazardous waste. Unfortunately for policy makers, it is clear that this energy and focus from people across the UK will not stop until the problem is solved. But the activists (and that’s what they are, even if some never expected to be!) from café owners and teachers to school kids and adventurers use their agency to think beyond the plastic pandemic. They’ve swept up progressive businesses and organisations with their enthusiasm, so we’ve decided to celebrate the very best. Credit where credit is due!”
This is the second time during 2021 REELshield Flip has been shortlisted for an award. Back in February, REELbrands plastic free sustainable face visor was shortlisted in the Edie Sustainability Leadership Awards.
REELshield Flip is a collaborative product, and we are grateful to TAM’S Packaging our manufacturing partners, for their involvement in the ground breaking new plastic free PPE.
“Tams Packaging share the REELBrands passion for reducing the use of single-use plastic and delivering sustainable solutions. The REELshield was a collaborative effort, born by the urgent need for protective face-coverings. The design was changed and enhanced over a number of development stages to achieve a fully compostable and entirely practical solution. Everything is environmentally friendly, including using paper tape of on the outer cartons and sugar cane based degradable pallet wrap.
We are always keen to discuss different approaches with clients and share our experience to help them become more sustainable. If every company collaborates, then between us we can make a difference”.

More About the Awards…
The Plastic Free awards were founded by Surfers Against Sewage and Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation in 2019. They are environmental awards, with categories celebrating innovation and activism which tackles avoidable, single-use plastics.
The second hosting of the Plastic Free Awards will be a light at the end of the tunnel after months of extra work and hardship across the UK. It will feature as a way to celebrate those making the biggest contributions to stopping plastic pollution, cleaning up our environment, redesigning our relationship with plastic, innovating new products and materials, and freeing where we live from single-use plastics.
Surfers Against Sewage have been at the forefront of plastic pollution campaigning for over a decade, empowering hundreds of thousands of beach clean volunteers, founding the Plastic Free Communities movement, delivering award-winning campaigns and helping create positive change including the plastic bag charge and the commitment to deposit return schemes.
REELbrands are delighted to be part of the event, and wish our fellow shortlisted businesses the best of luck.
